Miami Book Fair's Writers Institute presents a Writing in Place: A Reading & Craft Talk with Bryan Washington.

We’ll talk about the role of setting as a character, source of conflict, voice, and foundation within short and extended works of fiction. Attendees will also participate with their own examples and experience as we discuss the myriad opportunities that rooting fiction in place can present.

Bryan Washington is a writer from Houston. His fiction and essays have appeared in The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, The New York Times Style Magazine, BuzzFeed, the BBC, Vulture, The Paris Review, Boston Review, Tin House, One Story, Bon Appétit, MUNCHIES, American Short Fiction, GQ, FADER, The Awl, The Believer, Hazlitt, and Catapult, where he wrote a column called “Bayou Diaries.” He is also a National Book Foundation 5 Under 35 winner, an Ernest J. Gaines Award recipient, and the recipient of an O. Henry Award. His first book, Lot, was published by Riverhead. His first novel, Memorial, is forthcoming October 27.
