Even in its immediate aftermath, Waterloo was widely recognised as one of the most decisive battles in British history. After more than 20 years of uninterrupted conflict, this single-day encounter finally extinguished French aspirations for European dominance.

In this insightful talk, Dr Gregory Fremont-Barnes will examine the tactical successes and failures of both sides. He will also consider why Waterloo has generated more fascination and academic scrutiny than any other battle in British history.

Gregory Fremont-Barnes is Senior Lecturer in the Department of War Studies at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. He has written extensively on a range of subjects covering military affairs since the 18th century. In addition to teaching cadets, he travels widely for the Ministry of Defence, running courses for foreign military and intelligence officers. He spent two years in Afghanistan on Operation Toral.
