In She Come By It Natural, a wide-ranging and personal examination of the career and trajectory of Dolly Parton, author Sarah Smarsh (Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth) considers the country music star as an icon for poor, working class and undervalued women. She Come By It Natural  explores the power inherent in the struggles and achievements in Parton’s life and the songs that spoke to the women around Smarsh including those in her own family where “country music was foremost a language among women.”
