Mark L. Clifford: Today Hong Kong
By TPLCulture
Journalist, historian and author Mark L. Clifford spent almost thirty years living in Hong Kong. In that time, he accessed the full range of the city’s society, from student protestors and political prisoners to aristocrats and senior government officials.
In his new book Today Hong Kong, Tomorrow the World, Clifford looks at the Hong Kong handover and the creation of the constitutional principle “One Country, two systems” which promised 50 years of political and economic autonomy. But as we near the halfway mark of this promise, universal suffrage and free elections have not been instituted, harassment and brutality have become normalized, and activists are being jailed en masse.
Mark L. Clifford shares Today Hong Kong, Tomorrow the World with host Jennifer Lau, and discusses one of the most important geopolitical standoffs of our time.
