Climate - Daniel Pauly: The Ocean's Whistleblower

By TPLCulture

Daniel Pauly is considered one of the most important scientists in the world of marine biology and in his first authorized biography The Ocean 's Whistleblower he recounts his heartbreaking childhood, his escape to Germany, his political and racial reawakening in 1960s America, and his one-of-a-kind career as a brave scientist.
Born in Paris after World War II, to a French mother and Black father, Daniel Pauly began life facing great adversity. At a young age he was taken from his family and entered indentured servitude where, against all odds, he completed high school and left to university. Finding a love and passion for marine biology, his studies of oceanography would lead to an extraordinary career that would eventually lead him to be an early whistleblower on the impact of overfishing on our ecosystem. Daniel Pauly shares his extraordinary life and career in ocean sciences with Sarika Cullis-Suzuki and discusses how knowledge of environmental degradation is lost over time, leading to a misguided understanding of what we have helped destroy. *** This event is part of TPL's On Civil Society: Climate series, a year-long programming initiative that explores the effects that climate change is having on the only habitat we have. We are faced with radical and unknown effects on the world’s oceans, rivers, wildlife and diminishing biodiversity. These new realities of a future world paint a sobering picture that disrupts the very idea of humankind and its interventions on the planet. On Civil Society: Climate is a collaborative project sponsored by Toronto Public Library, the Consulat Général de France à Toronto et Institut Français.
