The 19th Celebrates: Disability Pride Month

By The 19th News

The 19th Celebrates series works within communities to amplify their stories and highlight the successes and ongoing fights for representation.
For Disability Pride Month, we’re thrilled to welcome Raven Sutton, a disability advocate and influencer, and Carson Pickett, a defender for Racing Louisville FC, to discuss the state of people with disabilities in our culture. The 19th's caregiving reporter, Sara Luterman, interviews them about their careers, how people with disabilities are increasingly in the spotlight and how they’re telling their own stories.

Meet our speakers:

Carson Pickett is a defender for the NWSL’s Racing Louisville FC. She was born without a left forearm, and became the first player with a limb difference to play for the U.S. Women's National Team.
Raven Sutton is a disability advocate and influencer. She made history by becoming the first deaf contestant to compete on Netflix’s popular game show “The Circle.”
Moderator: Sara Luterman is The 19th’s caregiving reporter. They previously worked as a freelancer covering disability policy, politics and culture.

About The 19th

The 19th is an independent nonprofit newsroom reporting at the intersection of gender, politics and policy. We aim to empower women, people of color and the LGBTQ+ community with the information, community and tools they need to be equal participants in our democracy. The 19th aims to level the playing field with:
  • Free-to-consume and free-to-republish journalism that reimagines politics and policy coverage through a gender lens
  • Deep-dive, evidence-based reporting that exposes gender inequity and injustice, and reveals surprising and original stories on the issues that most deeply affect our readers’ lives, from health care to the economy
  • A newsroom that reflects the nation’s diversity, and is devoted to covering all people with empathy
  • A digital platform for civil conversations and community building, and national events that bring our readers into direct contact with their elected officials
The 19th aims to be a home for all people affected by the issues we cover. To that end, all members of our community are expected to observe our community guidelines when engaging on our website, newsletters, social channels, events or other platforms.
