Black History Month and the Perils of Symbolic Blackness with Dr. Brenna Wynn Greer, Associate Professor Wellesley College

By The Redwood Library & Athenæum

As a nation, we approach Black History Month as a time to honor this nation’s most famous Black figures, especially civil rights leaders and Black freedom fighters. Unfortunately, in celebrating these figures, schools, museums, politicians, advertisers, and media typically focus on the symbolic versions and value of these Black Americans. Dr.Brenna Greer discusses the motivations behind and dangers of reducing African American History to a focus on Black icons.
