Sweet Taste of Liberty
By The Mercantile Library
Join us for a conversation with W. Caleb McDaniel as he discusses his Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Sweet Taste of Liberty: A True Story of Slavery and Restitution in America with Richard Moore.
McDaniel's book tells the story of Henrietta Wood, a woman who survived enslavement twice and then sued one of her former enslavers, ultimately winning the largest known sum ever awarded by a U.S. court in restitution for slavery. Above all, *Sweet Taste of Liberty* is a portrait of an extraordinary individual as well as a searing reminder of the lessons of her story, which establish beyond question the connections between slavery and the prison system that rose in its
place."
Sweet Taste of Liberty is partly set in Cincinnati and includes many familiar names including Alphonso Taft and Lafcadio Hearn.
W. Caleb McDaniel is Mary Gibbs Jones Professor of Humanities and Professor of History at Rice University. Richard L. Moore is a past president of The Mercantile Library and an attorney at Frost Brown.
