Sustaining Our Spirits #7 - Lisle Gwynn Garrity

By David LaMotte

Rev. Lisle Gwynn Garrity is a Pastorist, a retreat leader, and creative entrepreneur seeking to fill the church and the world with more color, paint, mystery, and creativity. Her ministry is rooted in the prophetic and freeing power of art to connect us more deeply to God and one another. Lisle travels widely to work with congregations and communities of faith. She leads creative retreats of all kinds, facilitates communities in creating large-scale art together, live paints for worship and events, and creates commissioned art for churches and individuals. As an ordained Minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), she approaches her work as an artist primarily through the lenses of pastor and theologian, and vice versa.
Lisle and her husband Paul live about four blocks away from me in Black Mountain, NC, where my kid and my wife and I make a point of stopping by their house every Halloween, because they always do it up right. Lisle says she lives for creative opportunities of all kinds, especially at the intersections of art and justice, yoga, mountains, and long walks with her energetic pups, Max and Maven.
I've had the opportunity to work with Lisle before, and I'm moved by the depth of her perspective and insight, whether that's in the context of an artistic project, a theological conversation, an exploration of justice and equity issues, or — most often — all of the above at the same time. I'm excited to share this conversation with you. Hope you can join us!
