Sustaining Our Spirits #13 - Ellis, singer/songwriter

By David LaMotte

Ellis is like a human vitamin. I feel healthier and happier after a dose.
A frequent guest on A Prairie Home Companion, and a winner of awards in the Mountain Stage New Song Contest, as well as a winner of the New Folk Song Contest at the Kerrville Folk Festival, Ellis is beloved by critics and fans alike.
She's also an innovator in the gift economy, who has taught me more than she knows about finding new ways forward as musicians in uncertain times. Long before the pandemic, the evaporation of music sales was presenting a real challenge to professional musicians. Ellis' response was generosity — she decided to give away downloads of all of her music and invite people to be a part of a Patreon community that supports her financially if they feel so led. The music really is free, and the support that comes through Patreon is a gift, as well. I'm looking forward to talking with Ellis about music, finding joy in hard times, spiritual practice, parenting as a touring artist, resilience, and whatever else she wants to talk about.
The uber-hip music magazine No Depression has this to say about Ellis, "If ever there was a feel-good folk musician, this is the woman – somebody who really does send you off feeling better about the world."
Lots of us could use a bit of that right now, so invite your friends and join us for what is sure to be an uplifting and authentic conversation.
