Sustaining Our Spirits #11 - Billy Jonas
By David LaMotte
Billy Jonas is a songsmith, multi-instrumentalist, Jewish educator, and multi-faith advocate. He has captivated audiences worldwide since 1987 (before that, he let them roam freely). Billy uses voice, guitar and “industrial re-percussion” (instruments made from found objects) to create music that is engaging, whimsical, and moving. He currently tours with “The Billy Jonas Band,” and is one third of the Muslim/Christian/Jewish trio, “Abraham Jam,” along with Dawud Wharnsby, and me. When home, Billy is a cantorial soloist at Congregation Beth Ha Tephila in Asheville, NC, where he lives with his wife and daughter.
Billy is the only person I know who has played both the White Horse and the White House, and I have been proud and grateful to call him my friend for a quarter-century. He writes songs that are unlike any others on the planet, and I love how his music manages to both tickle my head and warm my heart.
We have also spent a bunch of time traveling together, creating music together and figuring out how to navigate being in a band, which is a new experience for me. We have had amazing conversations about theology and politics and music and hope and healing, and I’m really happy to get to welcome the rest of you into this particular conversation with my friend Billy Jonas.
