Profs and Pints Online presents: “Meet Russia’s Snow Maiden,” a discussion of the tales and traditions of Slavic winters, with folklorist Philippa Rappoport of George Washington University.
[ This talk will remain available in recorded form at the link given here for tickets and access.]
Embrace the approaching winter as only the Russians do with the help of Professor Rappoport, who previously has captivated Profs and Pints audiences with talks on Russia’s mermaids, place spirits, and netherworlds. She’s bringing us the perfect talk for the approach of the winter solstice, a look at the folklore and rituals that Russians turn to as the days shorten and the snow falls.
She’ll introduce us to Snegurochka—“the snow maiden”—a little girl made out of snow. Snegurochka’s story has inspired a symphony, a ballet, and elaborate costumes. Long before that, she was the focus of pre-Christian traditions that involved creating effigies of her that people paraded around and then ritually burned in fires.
We’ll also spend time with Snegurochka’s grandfather, Russia’s “Father Frost,” who visits during the Yuletide holiday to bestow gifts on those who celebrate his arrival with dances and songs.
Along with steeping us in traditional Russian culture, the talk will draw connections between the beloved tale of Snegurochka and other winter solstice celebrations, including Christmas and Chanukah.
It might be getting cold outside, but this talk will warm your heart.
