By Profs and Pints
đˇ
Profs and Pints Online presents: âThe Women of Hamilton,â with Cassandra Good, assistant professor of history at Marymount University and author of Founding Friendships: Friendships Between Men and Women in the Early American Republic.
The musical Hamilton isnât just about the founding fathersâit features strong women of the period as well. But what was really going on between Hamilton and his sister-in-law Angelica Schuyler Church? Who was the infamous Maria Reynolds? And what happened to Hamiltonâs widow Eliza after his death?
These are just a few of the questions weâll explore as we dive into the world of the women of Hamilton. Using the songs featuring female characters as jumping off points, weâll learn about the Schuyler sisters, Maria Reynolds, Theodosia Burr, and other women in Hamiltonâs orbit.
These womenâs lives provide windows to understanding important developments in late-eighteenth century American life including the evolving role of marriage, the involvement of women in politics, and changing sexual norms.
Cassandra Good, who also has given a great Profs and Pints talk titled âFounding Fathers in the âFriend Zone,ââ will offer up a captivating discussion of women in our nation's early years.
