Peyton Thomas: Both Sides Now
By TPL Programs
Both Sides Now is the exciting debut novel from breakout Toronto author and journalist Peyton Thomas, who has bylines in Pitchfork, Billboard, and Vanity Fair and was a 2016 Lambda Literary Fellow studying under Benjamin Alire Sáenz.
The book follows Finch Kelly, a high school senior with dreams of attending college in Washington DC and a history-making career as the first trans congressman. The only thing standing between him and his goals is the National Speech & Debate Tournament. Oh, and maybe his crush on his debate partner, Jonah.
Worst of all, though, is this year’s debate topic: transgender rights. If Finch wants to cinch the gold and get into college, he might have to argue against his own humanity. People say there are two sides to every argument, but as Finch is about to discover, some things—like who you are and who you love—are not up for debate.
Peyton appears in conversation with Toronto Public Library to discuss his work, upcoming projects, and the importance of transgender rights and social justice. An audience Q&A session will follow.
