The Second Cut by Louise Welsh

By The Portobello Bookshop

We can't wait to welcome Louise Welsh to Portobello for an event in celebration of her new novel. The Second Cut is the highly-anticipated sequel to her cult classic debut, The Cutting Room. On the night, she'll be in conversation with fellow author Paula Hawkins.
About The Second Cut:
Auctioneer Rilke has been trying to stay out of trouble, keeping his life more or less respectable. Business has been slow at Bowery Auctions, so when an old friend, Jojo, gives Rilke a tip-off for a house clearance, life seems to be looking up. The next day Jojo washes up dead.
Jojo liked Grindr hook-ups and recreational drugs – is that the reason the police won’t investigate? And if Rilke doesn’t find out what happened to Jojo, who will?
Thrilling and atmospheric, The Second Cut delves into the dark side of twenty-first century Glasgow. Twenty years on from his appearance in The Cutting Room, gay auctioneer Rilke is still walking a moral tightrope between good and bad, saint and sinner.
Louise Welsh is an award-winning author of eight novels. The Cutting Room, her debut novel, won the Crime Writers’ Association John Creasey Dagger and the Saltire First Book of The Year Award. In 2018, she was awarded the Most Inspiring Saltire First Book Award winner by public vote. She is Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow.
The first thriller from Paula Hawkins, The Girl on the Train, has sold 23 million copies worldwide. Published in over forty languages, it has been a Number 1 bestseller around the world and was a box office hit film starring Emily Blunt. Paula's second thriller, Into the Water, and her latest book, A Slow Fire Burning, were also instant Number 1 bestsellers.
The event will be streamed live from the bookshop to attendees viewing from home. We are planning for this event to take place in the bookshop with a small in-person audience. However, depending on COVID regulations at the time of the event, those purchasing the book & in-person audience option will also receive the link to watch the event from home, should we be unable to welcome people into the bookshop on the night.
When you purchase a signed – and if requested, dedicated – copy of The Second Cut via the options below, you will also receive access to the livestream of the event. There is also an option to purchase a £3 voucher which provides access to the livestream. The voucher can be used on any item in the bookshop and on our website – including books by Louise Welsh and Paula Hawkins. Following Scottish Government advice and guidelines, in-person audience attendees will be asked to wear a face covering inside the bookshop unless they are exempt.
