This presentation will delve into the life and work of Lorenzo Johnston Greene, who wrote one of the first extensivetexts on black life in the region, publishing The Negro in Colonial New England in 1942. Greene was mentored by,and also worked as a research assistant for Carter G. Woodson, the foremost initiator of Negro History Week (nowBlack History Month). Dr. Roberts will discuss both Greene's scholarly contributions to the study of Black historybroadly, as well as his groundbreaking study of Black life in New England specifically.
