An Inquisitive Night of Jazz with Alex Hamburger
By City of Asylum
After some time away—a few years in New York and one in Switzerland— flutist, vocalist, and composer Alex Hamburger has returned to her roots and is ready to make some noise. This program is part of the CD release tour for her sophomore album What If?. The new album features returning bandmates José Luiz Martins and Chase Elodia, as well as the introduction of Tyrone Allen II on bass and Patrick Graney on percussion. The album was recorded in spring 2022 with help from Chamber Music America’s 2021 Performance Plus Grant. What If? is set to release on June 8th 2023.
About the Artist:
Alex Hamburger (she/her)fell in love with music very early, growing up in the Washington, D.C. area as the daughter of two accomplished artists, a drummer and a dancer. Her debut album And She Spoke (released in November 2021) brings together a collection of music inspired by the diverse and ever-changing concept of the female voice. It features original compositions heavily inspired by poetry written through the female voice and personalized arrangements of female-written compositions. The album's CD release tour was funded by the Jazz Road touring grant and a national initiative of South Arts, with additional support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. In January 2022, Alex’s quartet traveled to South America to play in Mercedes, Uruguay as a part of the annual Jazz a la Calle Festival and in São Paulo, Brazil at Jazz B. In addition to making a splash abroad, Alex is also making headway in the D.C. music community, as a 2022 Strathmore artist-in-residence and a 2022 Wammie nominee.
