A Soldier’s Life in the 18th Century

By National Army Museum

The 18th century presented Britain with a new set of challenges, from wars in far-flung places to the emergence of the French Consulate. For those serving in the British Army, it was a time of struggle and adventure.
Using letters, diaries and official recordings, Professor Stephen Conway provides an insight into the lives of British soldiers and an analysis of what mattered most to them.
Professor Stephen Conway is a professor at University College London. His research is focused on 18th-century Britain and its connections with the wider world. He has published several works including ‘The British Isles and the War of American Independence’ and ‘War, State and Society in Mid-Eighteenth Century Britain and Ireland’.
