Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Live With The 19th

Join The 19th’s Amanda Becker on Monday, June 15, at 1 pm ET (Noon CT) for a live conversation with Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. During her tenure, Whitmer has led the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and a 500-year flood, and also delivered the Democratic response to President Donald Trump’s 2020 State of the Union Address. She has tangled with the president over coronavirus relief funds and been mentioned as a possible vice presidential pick for Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee.

About our speakers

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (@GovWhitmer), a lifelong Michigander, is a lawyer, an educator, former prosecutor and the first woman to lead a Michigan senate caucus. Whitmer was elected to the state House of Representatives in 2000 and elected to the Michigan State Senate in 2006, where she served as the Senate Democratic Leader. In the 2018 gubernatorial election, Whitmer won all 83 counties in the primary and won the general election with 53 percent of the vote. Since taking her oath of office, she has put together the most diverse cabinet in the state’s history and has signed executive directives to clean up its drinking water, end discrimination in state government based on sexual orientation and gender identity, secure equal pay for equal work, and expand opportunities for small and disadvantaged businesses.
Whitmer and her husband, Marc, live in Lansing with her two daughters, Sherry and Sydney. Her three stepsons, Alex, Mason, and Winston, all live in Michigan as well.

About The 19th📷

The 19th is a nonprofit, nonpartisan newsroom reporting at the intersection of gender, politics and policy. We aim to empower women — particularly those underserved by and underrepresented in American media — with the information, community and tools they need to be equal participants in our democracy. This summer, The 19th is launching a nonprofit news platform for women seeking news and information at the intersection of gender, politics and policy. The 19th aims to level the playing field with:
  • Free-to-consume and free-to-republish journalism that reimagines politics and policy coverage through a gender lens
  • Deep-dive, evidence-based reporting that exposes gender inequity and injustice, and reveals surprising and original stories on the issues that most deeply affect women’s lives, from health care to the economy
  • A newsroom that reflects the racial and socioeconomic diversity of American women and is devoted to covering all women with empathy
  • A digital platform for civil conversations and community building, and national events that bring our readers into direct contact with their elected officials
