ADWA with Haile Gerima (USA/Germany/Ethiopia, 1999, 97 min)
In 1896, Ethiopia, an African nation largely armed with spears and knives, defeats a well- equipped and organized Italian military bent on colonization.
Haile Gerima is an independent filmmaker and professor of film at Howard University in Washington, D.C. He is a leading figure in Third World Cinema, and a foundational force of the “LA Rebellion” Independent Cinema movement. Gerima’s other films include Bush Mama (1976), Ashes & Embers (1982), and Sankofa (1993).
