Edible school gardens are ideal spaces to talk about and celebrate diversity and cultural traditions around food and agriculture. Join KidsGardening for a lively discussion with renowned garden educators and authors Dr. Dilafruz Williams, Amoreena Guerrero, and Lori Koenick to discuss what culturally inclusive garden-based learning looks like and how we can make it the norm across our edible school garden programs.

Lori Koenick
đź“· Lori serves as the Seeds of Wonder curriculum lead with Cornell Garden-Based Learning. Inspired by love of the natural world and belief in the power of young people and connection, Lori strives to create accessible learning experiences and center a culture of belonging. Prior to her current position, Lori worked as a 4-H Youth Development Educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County.
Dilafruz Williams, PhD

Dilafruz Williams, PhD is Professor of Leadership for Sustainability Education in the department of Educational Leadership and Policy at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon.. With dozens of partners, she has designed, co-founded, and supported several cutting-edge initiatives, such as: Learning Gardens Laboratory, Leadership for Sustainability Education master’s program, Sunnyside Environmental School, and an NSF-funded project, Science in the Learning Gardens: Factors that Support Ethnic and Racial Minority Students in Low-Income Schools.
A prolific scholar, Dr. Williams has authored over 70 chapters, journal articles, and curriculum resource guides and has given close to 200 invited lectures, symposia, and conference papers. Her research has focused extensively on garden-based education, environmental education, place-based education, urban education, and service learning. Her co-authored book, Learning Gardens and Sustainability Education: Bringing Life to Schools and Schools to Life (Routledge, 2012), presents a practical model of student engagement with gardens, that serve as milieus for learning. She is also co-editor of Ecological Education in Action: On Weaving Education, Culture, and the Environment (SUNY, 1999).

Amoreena Guerrero, author of "Increasing Inclusion in the School Garden"
📷As the Youth Grow Manager with Growing Gardens, Amoreena Guerrero supports a team of educators and garden coordinators to create engaging garden education programs for our 12 partner schools and their students. Amoreena holds a Master’s degree in Education and has 18 years of teaching experience, both in the indoor classroom and outdoors. Over the years, she's had the honor of coordinating the design, build out and maintenance of several school gardens. In addition, she's developed and delivered garden-based educational programming for thousands of students ranging from ages 3-14. She views garden and food based education as an impactful avenue to assist young people in the development of a positive self identity and to strengthen their connections to the outdoors and the communities they are part of.
