Crafting Bold Heroines in Young Adult Fiction

By Charis Books and More/Charis Circle

Charis presents Crafting Bold Heroines in Young Adult Fiction, a panel organized by Tor Teen.
The panel features Elayne Audrey Becker (moderator), author of Forestborn, Charlotte Nicole Davis (Sisters of Reckoning), Susan Dennard (Witchshadow), Bethany C. Morrow (A Chorus Rises), and Shannon Price (Endless Skies).
Ever wonder how your favorite sci-fi, fantasy, and speculative fiction YA authors write exciting and "real" heroines in worlds both familiar and wildly different from our own? Join us for this exciting panel of Tor Teen writers who are known for their feminist takes on tales of magic, power, family, redemption, and revenge. This virtual event is perfect for people of all ages, but we especially encourage young writers who are seeking to learn more about craft to attend and ask questions.
This event is co-sponsored by Outlantacon, Atlanta's LGBTQ+ convention for Sci-fi, Pop-culture, Multi-media, & Gaming! Learn more about the 2022 con here: https://www.outlantacon.org
ELAYNE AUDREY BECKER is a storyteller with a passion for history, myth, mountains, and magic. She holds a BA from Vassar College and an MSc from the University of Aberdeen and has worked as an editor at a New York publisher. Born and raised in Georgia, she grew up with a lake and woods as her backyard, spending long days outside and visiting national parks with her family.
Charlotte Nicole Davis is the critically acclaimed author of The Good Luck Girls and loves comic book movies and books with maps in the front. A graduate of The New School's Writing for Children MFA program, she currently lives in Brooklyn.
SUSAN DENNARD is the author of the New York Times bestselling Witchlands series as well as the Something Strange and Deadly series. She has come a long way from small-town Georgia. Working in marine biology, she got to travel the world—six out of seven continents (she’ll get to Asia one of these days!)—before she settled down as a full-time novelist and writing instructor. When not writing, she can be found hiking with her dogs, slaying darkspawn on her Xbox, or earning bruises at the dojo. Visit her website at www.susandennard.com or follow her on Twitter or Instagram @stdennard.
Bethany C. Morrow is a recovering expat recently returning from six years in Montreal, Quebec, to live and write in north country New York. A California native, Bethany graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a BA in Sociology. Following undergrad, she studied Clinical Psychological Research at the University of Wales, Bangor, in Great Britain before returning to North America to focus on her literary work. She is the author of the adult novel Mem (Unnamed Press) and the editor of the young adult anthology Take the Mic (Arthur A. Levine Books).
SHANNON PRICE is a proud Filipina-American and Bay Area native. She once led an a cappella group for three years despite not knowing how to read music, and she carries that same level of confidence in every area of her life. When not writing, she can be found watching baking shows, exploring old bookstores, and going to the beach as often as she can. A Thousand Fires is her first novel.
This event is free and open to all people, especially to those who have no income or low income right now, but we encourage and appreciate a solidarity donation in support of the work of Charis Circle, our programming non-profit.
