Flying Flexibility with Catie Brier (replay available)

By Shannon McKenna Aerial

***REPLAY IS AVAILABLE - WATCH WHEN IT WORKS FOR YOU, AS MANY TIMES AS YOUR LITTLE HEART DESIRES***
***NO AERIAL EQUIPMENT REQUIRED***
Have you ever walked into your training space and wondered:
  • How much time do I need to spend stretching before I can get in the air?
  • How come my splits are flat on the ground, but in the air my legs are shaped like a slice of pizza?
  • How bendy does my back need to be before I can do a flag/back balance/put my foot on my head in the air?
  • Why do bad things happen to good people?
All of these questions (except maybe that last one) boil down to a problem plaguing aerialists since time immemorial:
How can I safely be both STRONG and BENDY?
It's a tricky balance that requires a precise warm-up, strategic stretching throughout your training, and a super specific cool-down.
This workshop with world renowned contortion coach Catie Brier will give you all the information you need to get your life together.
The workshop runs 1.5 hours and is divided into three parts:
1. THE FOOL PROOF WARM-UP
Although light passive stretching right before aerial loosens things up- that may not necessarily be a good thing! Also, sinking into your splits before hopping up on your apparatus won’t teach your body to instinctively get all of the supporting muscles firing to use that flexibility efficiently in the air.
In this section, Catie and Shannon will take you through a battery of targeted exercises that will get those supporting muscles fired up and ready to support you in your training!
2. TRAINING SESSION
This section is all about strategy- it's important to plan how/when you will bend during your training session, while still being balanced enough to stay tight for dynamic movement.
Catie will share some of her best back bending tips, and there will be time for discussion about tricks such as reverse meat hooks, back balances, and foot to head.
3. THE COOL-DOWN
One of the most important aspects of a bendy aerial training session is also one of the most overlooked- the cool down. This is the time in your training where, when done right, you have the potential to make the most flexibility GAINS.
For this section, Catie will demonstrate on poor Shannon's aerialist shoulders, how and why it's important to keep a balance.
4. Q & A
At the end of the workshop, there will be time for live attendees to ask specific questions that will be beneficial to all. Those who receive the recording will be able to watch this portion in the replay.
