Translating for Performance: In Between Voices
In Out of the Wings we translate and perform plays from Spanish and Portuguese into English. We have, increasingly, been tested by and responded to the question: to which and whose voices does English belong? In our multicultural city, English is mediated and vocalized through hundreds of languages and belongs to each of those voices. When we translate, we need a material consciousness of those voices, and it is a duty to our context to work with different forms of English, accents, and modalities on stage. These speak to class, ethnicity, belief, difference, assimilation, and urban inventiveness. This workshop explores the concrete and changing ways in which we tackle increasingly urgent questions about the in-betweenness of voice, taking the Out of the Wings Festival as our case study.
