Río L.A.: Tales from the Los Angeles River poetically recounts, in dramatic words and even-more dramatic pictures, the history and lore of the once under-appreciated Los Angeles River. With attention focused on the humble waterway by people and organizations throughout the country, the Los Angeles River is once again emerging as the heart of the region.
When Río L.A. was first published at the beginning of the millennium, few people even regarded the river, but aided by Morrison’s and Lamonica’s bestselling book, the Los Angeles River was rediscovered and has become the center of the county’s master plan to reestablish it as central to the city. Morrison traces this rediscovery in her extensive new Afterword, following pages of river history, dating back to before the founding of the pueblo called Los Angeles. The combined skills of Morrison and Lamonica tell the extraordinary story of the river and the culture that revolves around this virtual oasis in a land of super highways and celluloid dreams.
Clockshop’s founder and director Julia Meltzer pens a contemporary Foreword, adding a fresh perspective for a new generation of readers. Her insightful words are coupled with the late Kevin Starr’s original Foreword, which combine to set the tone and recognize the importance of the book.
- Patt Morrison is an online columnist for the Los Angeles Times and has been a featured essayist on NPR’s Morning Edition. Honored with the prestigious Joseph M. Quinn Memorial Journalist Award, four Emmys, four Golden Mike awards, and the ACLU’s Freedom of Information Act Award, Morrison has twice won Pulitzer Prizes, as part of L.A. Times teams.
- Louis Sahagún is a staff writer for the Los Angeles Times, covering issues ranging from religion and culture to politics and water. He has twice been part of teams of L.A. Times writers nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, one of which won the award for public service and the second was named a finalist.
- Tilly Hinton is a cultural producer, scholar, and strategist. She has holds a Ph.D. focused on the LA River’s recent social history, and she took the late Lewis MacAdams seriously when he told her that her job was to articulate and protect the river’s future mythology.
