#TLDCast - Special Guest Mike Rustici
By The Training, Learning, and Development Community
As Watershed’s cofounder and CEO, Mike Rustici has a knack for analyzing and summarizing a wide array of ideas and information to find the right solutions—which makes him the perfect person to oversee a software company that provides those exact services. He’s an innovative software developer turned entrepreneur who has been defining the e-learning industry for nearly 20 years.
Even from a young age, Mike was pursuing his ideas and bringing them to fruition. In fact, he started his first business when he was 13 and he hasn’t slowed down since. In 1999, he began working as a software developer for an e-learning company, where he got “stuck” with a SCORM project. But what started as an uneventful project, evolved into a niche that led Mike to become the authority for all things SCORM and later inspired him to establish Rustici Software in 2002.
Under Mike’s guidance, Rustici Software wrote the first draft of the Tin Can API (xAPI) and invented the concept of a Learning Record Store (LRS)—revolutionizing the L&D world. In 2013, he delivered on the promise of Tin Can with the creation of Watershed, the flagship LRS that bridges the gap between training and performance. After earning numerous awards and becoming the global market leader in e-learning standards conformance, Rustici Software was acquired by Learning Technologies Group (LTG) in 2016.
And now, as Watershed’s fearless leader and unofficial mascot, Mike continues to be an expert in the area of learning interoperability standards as well as analytics for the measurement and evaluation of learning. He’s also a frequent guest speaker and has presented at more than 40 events worldwide on topics ranging from disruptive technology and performance improvement to company culture and business innovation.
