Decoding Poetry Translation Contracts
As poetry translators know well, navigating the publishing world is difficult—due in no small part to concerns specific to the genre. There are more model contracts out there for fiction translators, more standardized payment structures, and often more payment in general. This panel aims to address the gap by providing case studies of the many ways in which books of translated poetry can come to be, as well as practical advice for translators of poetry who want to learn to advocate for their manuscripts, their poets, and for themselves. We’ll also discuss acquiring translation rights, project grants and timelines, and more. Panelists are poetry translators, publishers of poetry in translation, and an attorney with the Authors Guild.

Kelsi Vanada is ALTA’s Program Manager. She is a poet and translator from Spanish and sometimes Swedish. Her translations include Into Muteness (Veliz Books, 2020) and The Eligible Age (Song Bridge Press, 2018), and she is the author of the poetry chapbook Rare Earth (Finishing Line Press, 2020). Kelsi was an ALTA Travel Fellow in 2016.
Umair Kazi is Director of Policy & Advocacy at the Authors Guild, writer, and translator from Urdu. He studied law at the University of Iowa, and received his MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia University.
Anastasia Nikolis, PhD, is an educator, scholar, writer, and editor. She is Poetry Editor at Open Letter Books and currently teaches courses in writing, literature, and gender studies at the Rochester Institute of Technology and St. John Fisher College.
