Will McPhail – Love & Vermin
By The Portobello Bookshop
We couldn’t be happier to be hosting the launch event for Will McPhail’s upcoming cartoon collection, Love & Vermin. His graphic novel, In, is a favourite amongst our booksellers and won the Betty Trask Prize at the 2022 Society of Authors’ Awards. We’re so looking forward to another book from the award-winning New Yorker cartoonist. He will be in conversation with comics creator and events programmer, Nyla Ahmad.
We are planning for this event to take place in the bookshop with an in-person audience, as well as a livestream for attendees watching from home.
In-person vouchers can be used on the night of the event against anything in the bookshop – we will have a list of attendee vouchers at the ready. Livestream vouchers are valid until the day after the event and can be used on the website against the price of Love & Vermin.
About Love & Vermin:
The insightful and hilarious first collection by Will McPhail, with over 200 cartoons, including his New Yorker classics and new gems. With his shrewd eye for mundane absurdities and hysterically astute drawings of animals, Will McPhail is one of Britain’s most distinctive young cartoonists. His cartoons delight in the everyday anxieties of modern life, skewer contemporary politics, and cut to the core of the most bizarre human behaviours.
Now, in McPhail’s first collection, new cartoons mix with old favourites: mischievous mice and opportunistic pigeons offer portals into McPhail’s crackling curiosity, while Lady No-Kids’ adventures continue with high-flying glee. With chapters ranging from the contemporary to the universal, and a classic black and white interior that evokes the timelessness of the craft, Love & Vermin proves why Will McPhail is one of the most cherished cartoonists of his generation.
Will McPhail has been contributing cartoons, sketchbooks and humour pieces to the New Yorker since 2014. His work has also been published in Private Eye and the New Statesman. In 2013 he won the British Cartoonists’ Association’s Young Cartoonist of the Year and the NCS Reuben Award for Gag Cartoonist of the Year in 2016. In: The Graphic Novel was published in 2021 and won the Betty Trask Prize 2022. He lives in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Nyla Ahmad is a comics creator, events programmer and works as Reading Communities Manager at Scottish Book Trust, leading on programming Book Week Scotland, and as vibes consultant for Scottish literary magazine, Extra Teeth. She received a Bookseller Rising Star in 2021 and was the inaugural awardee of Literature Alliance Scotland’s Next Level programme. Nyla is on the Glasgow Zine Library board of trustees & the steering committee of the Society of Authors Comics Creators Network. She previously co-led the BHP Comics project Full Colour, a mentoring programme for young comics creators from BAME backgrounds; she also edited the resulting anthology. When not working or reading, Nyla spends time with her cat, drinks copious amounts of tea and plays bass in Glasgow punk band Joyce Delaney.
