Dan O'Brien is the author of fourteen books of fiction and nonfiction, mostly about the contemporary American West and the environment. His books have won several awards, including Spur Awards and Wrangler Prizes, and they have been re-published in many languages. The recipient of two NEA grants, Dan has taught writing and environmental studies at various universities. He has operated a buffalo ranch in western South Dakota for twenty-five years, and he appeared in the 2023 Ken Burns documentary The American Buffalo. He lives on the Cheyenne River Buffalo Ranch east of South Dakota’s Black Hills. His latest book is Great Plains Bison.
