Water Weavers Series: A virtual gathering with water weavers - people who have deep practices, knowledge, and wisdom around water connection. This is an invitation to expand our understanding of water and the beautiful, complex, and miraculous ways water is woven into our lineage, bodies, and lives. The series alternates between a conversation space and cultural practice space.
The April gathering is a conversation space that invites participants of all identities to learn from author and history Professor Kevin Dawson.
Questions explored include: How did Atlantic African civilizations historically interact with water and swimming? How did enslaved Black Americans engage with water and swimming? What misconceptions exist around black peoples story with water?

Kevin Dawson Professor and author Dr. Kevin Dawson teaches history at UC Merced with a focus on the African Diaspora. He recently received the Harriet Tubman Prize for his book, Undercurrents of Power: Aquatic Culture in the African Diaspora, which corrects and revises the history of swimming to include and recognize the contributions and accomplishments of Africans to aquatics.
