Sarah Broom: The Yellow House
By TPLCulture
Sarah Broom's best-selling memoir, The Yellow House (winner of the 2019 National Book Award), traces her remarkable journey through lives lived in a simple yellow home where she grew up in the storied and often troubled city of New Orleans. Chronicling her childhood, her family and the tragedies that serve as a microcosm for the barriers that much of the American population struggle against, the book shows us how the myth of The American Dream was and continues to be simply out of reach for many, particularly as it applies to poor African American communities faced with the ugly specter of systemic racism and economic hurdles.
Sarah Broom talks with Garvia Bailey about her book and its excavation of a city, a community and a family.
