Asian Heritage - Thieving, Grieving and Leaving: New Fiction of Displacement

By TPLCulture

Three writers discuss their new novels that each centre around adapting to a new or changing world.
In her taut and riveting new novel, Your House Will Pay, Steph Cha explores the shooting of a young African American by a Korean shop owner in a 1991 Los Angeles on edge in the weeks following the Rodney King assault. In Days of Distraction by Alexandra Chang, the highly biographical novel follows the protagonist as she moves with her partner from a vibrant San Francisco career-focused life to a quiet upstate New York and the isolation and discombobulation which follows (in snippets of conversation and personal jottings). Finally, Susie Yang’s White Ivy chronicles a young Chinese-American woman who turns to stealing as a way to understand her new world in a book which, despite its funny passages, is a serious meditation on race and class in contemporary America.
Steph Cha, Alexandra Chang and Susie Yang speak to arts journalist and podcast producer, Aparita Bhandari about their novels.
