Three recent books about Frida Kahlo explore pivotal relationships and experiences which  impacted her artistic and creative life in fundamental ways. Celia Stahr’s Frida in America chronicles a newly married Kahlo as she traveled through the United States at a pivotal moment in its history where visions of its racism, poverty and opulent wealth deeply affected her and opened up new fields for her as an artist. Marc Petitjeans’s book, The Heart: Frida Kahlo in Paris, depicts her sojourn through the vibrant arts scene of 1930s Paris, rubbing shoulders with Picasso, Duchamp and Breton, and a key love affair (with Petitjean’s own father) that affected her for the rest of her life. And Héctor Jaimes presents a collection of letters, You Are Always With Me: Letters to Mama, which show one of the most significant figures in Kahlo’s life and the complex nature of the mother/daughter relationship.

Hosted by Dr. Dot Tuer, OCAD University and curator of Frida & Diego: Passion, Politics and Painting (Art Gallery of Ontario), the authors discuss key relationships and experiences that influenced Kahlo’s work.
