Camilla Gibb: The Relatives
By TPLCulture
The Relatives is acclaimed author Camilla Gibb’s fifth novel which grapples with bold and complicated ideas through the kind of rich and lyrical prose that Gibb is renowned for. Gibb brings readers on Lila’s heartbreaking journey toward becoming a mother while Tess and Emily battle, post-breakup, over the embryos that were supposed to complete a once happy family. In Somalia, the man who served as donor to them all is being held in captivity. What does the unique way in which these people are all connected say about the concept of modern family? What does it take for each of us redefine family for ourselves? And what are the dividing lines between how we treat our own families, and how we treat the strangers that intersect with our journeys in life-altering ways?
Camilla Gibb was born in London, England, and grew up in Toronto. She is the author of four internationally acclaimed novels—Mouthing the Words, The Petty Details of So-and-so's Life, Sweetness in the Belly and The Beauty of Humanity Movement—as well as the bestselling memoir This is Happy. Camilla has been the recipient of the Trillium Book Award, the City of Toronto Book Award and the CBC Canadian Literary Award and has been shortlisted for the RBC Taylor Prize and the Scotiabank Giller Prize. She has a Ph.D. from Oxford University and is an adjunct faculty member of the graduate creative writing programs at the University of Toronto and the University of Guelph.
Camilla Gibb appears to discuss her latest novel, The Relatives with author and journalist Kamal Al-Solaylee.
