Two Canadian authors of Afro-Caribbean heritage, Nalo Hopkinson and Lateef Martin, discuss speculative fiction, Afrofuturism and the act of writing towards imagined worlds with Barbadian writer, Karen Lord.

Nalo Hopkinson, known for her futurist novels such as Brown Girl in the Ring about a dystopian future Toronto, and Midnight Robber, featuring a far-future Caribbean diaspora in space, was recently named the 37th Damon Knight Grand Master by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America  – the youngest person and the first woman of colour to be given that honour.

Lateef Martin is the co-creator of Z’Isle, a multimedia story about zombies taking over Montreal. Writer, illustrator, musician and more, his multidisciplinary approach has produced a range of art including comic books, theatre performances, video games and new musical instruments.

Hosted by Karen Lord, Barbadian speculative fiction author and futurist and author of Redemption in Indigo (2010), The Best of All Possible Worlds (2013) and Unraveling (2020).

These writers of Afro-Caribbean heritage will discuss their past work, recent accomplishments and future projects, and the delights and challenges of storytelling and creating in various media formats.
