Alaa Al Aswany: The Republic of False Truths
By TPLCulture
One of Egypt's most famed and best selling authors, Alaa Al Aswany has developed a career steeped in both astute political journalism and profound literary achievement. Recipient of multiple international awards as well as heavy handed political repression, Al Aswany has been credited for inspiring a whole generation of political activism across the Arab world.
In his newest novel The Republic of False Truths, Al Aswany revisits the tension building in Cairo on the eve of the Arab Spring through the eyes of both citizens and loyalists to the regime. As these stories intertwine and begin to reach a collision point, a new generation finds a voice, love blossoms across class divides, and the revolution gains strength in Tahrir Square.
Alaa Al Aswany joins the CBC's Nahlah Ayed to discuss The Republic of False Truths and to reflect on the ten year anniversary of the Arab Spring.
