Stephen Graham Jones: My Heart is a Chainsaw
By TPLCulture
Award winning and best selling author Stephen Graham Jones (The Only Good Indians) returns with an outrageously entertaining homage to the slasher horror genre that slyly touches on themes of Indigenous displacement, gentrification and colonial trauma.
In My Heart is a Chainsaw we meet Jade Daniels, a half-Indigenous outcast teen with an abusive father, an absentee mother and an encyclopedic mind filled with horror movie facts that fuels her escapist fantasies. When her sleepy town starts dripping with real blood, Jade starts to apply her knowledge and begins to predict the gory outcomes. But just as we think we know who Jade is, we get a startling look at a young, traumatized girl whose feelings are perhaps too big for her own body.
Stephen Graham Jones talks about My Heart is a Chainsaw with author Naben Ruthnum (aka Nathan Ripley) and discusses the horror genre as a vehicle for bigger and scarier conversations.
