Women’s sports never had a year like 2019. Stadiums were full of fans chanting “equal pay”, and a groundbreaking union contract for the WNBA was agreed. The 2019 Women's World Cup reached a global audience of 1.12bn viewers. All this heralded a time of financial parity for women's and men's sport.
But last week, a Fifpro report suggested that the women’s game is facing an "existential threat" and particularly vulnerable as it has less-established leagues, short-term contracts and lower value sponsorship deals.
