Sustaining Our Spirits #22 - Karl Werne - singer/songwriter
By David LaMotte
You might have seen Karl playing songs with his trio BiG WiDE GRiN, or in the Lewis McGehee Group, or in his band Instant Karma, or in the band, An Act of Kindness. Or you might have seen him in the band opening for Bruce Hornsby on his "The Way It Is" tour, or with his friend Keb' Mo'. Or you might have seen one of the stunning recordings he's been dropping on the internet in the recent weeks of pandemic.
The thing is, Karl can't help himself. He's got to play music.
The good news is that he's really good at it, and he lifts spirits with his art.
That's been recognized by others, of course, not just me. Karl's original songwriting won him first place for online voting ('Monkey Do') and first place in the finals ('Flow') of the Fishman National Songwriting Competition held in Atlanta, GA in 2011. He won VEER Magazine's award for Best Music Video in 2013 with a video of his song 'Love & Fear', Best Acoustic/Folk artist in 2016, and in 2019 won a VEER Award for hosting the best Open Mic.
Karl had the unique honor of writing the anthem/theme song for NASA's Centennial Celebration, in 2017, and performed it at four separate NASA events, once with the Air Force Heritage Band.
Karl's 3rd solo release is an all original CD, "This Little Notebook", and has been a long time in the making. The project features performances by many of his friends and musical heroes, including Tim Reynolds (Dave Matthews Band), and Chris Gage (Jerry Jeff Walker).
I'm proud to claim Karl as my friend, and can't wait to introduce any of you who don't know him. I hope you can join us!
