Structure Study Group
By Yarnworker
Materials, structure, and design are the three legged stool on which weaving rests. We have been looking at weaving through the lens of materials during the Yarn Study Group. In these sessions, we will look at it through a different lens—structure.
A weave structure is defined by how the warp and weft interlace. Commonly known structures are plain weave, twill, doublweave, pick-up lace, overshot, etc.
Keep in mind this is a discussion and not a class. You may feel like you are jumping into the middle of a rushing river and, in fact, you are. We all come to this subject with varying levels of expertise and enthusiasm. My hope is that I’ll thread the needle to create a more comprehensive learning landscape.
To give us a starting point or structure, pun intended, I will screen a series of lessons on drafting from the design chapter of Weaving 301. We will watch a brief video, then I’ll open up the session to questions and discussion.
The videos all relate to drafting for one heddle and a pick-up stick. I think it will give you an orientation to the rigid-heddle structural world view, set us up well for a new class, and offers some good fodder for discussion.
