Steve Majors: High Yella
By writersandbooks
Steve will be joined in conversation with Eman Quotah.
In his memoir High Yella, Steve Majors traces his life growing up in Batavia, NY as a white-passing son in an all-Black family; and later, marrying his husband and adopting their two daughters. In this poignant account, Majors returns to a broken past to find himself and helps his daughters discover their own place in the world. Along with the way, he grapples with family secrets, growing up in poverty, and the childhood abuse he faced—all while shedding light on the difficulties that multiracial people face in our nation, even within their own families and homes.
Steve Majors is a former television news journalist who has worked for such media organizations as NBC News and, most recently, mission-driven national nonprofits. His essays on race, culture, and identity have been published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and other outlets. He currently serves as vice president of marketing for a national education nonprofit serving marginalized students.
Eman Quotah is the author of the novel Bride of the Sea. She grew up in Jidda, Saudi Arabia, and Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Her writing has appeared in The Washington Post, USA Today, The Toast, The Establishment, Book Riot, Literary Hub, Electric Literature, and other publications.
