Dojo: New York City Transit Authority: Objects with Jesse Reed and Hamish Smyth

By TypeEd

The Typography Dojo is a place where we come together to explore the techniques in the practice of type and typography with training from design Sensei. Join us to learn from the masters.
New York City Transit Authority: Objects contains over 400 artifacts related to the New York City subway, collected and documented by photographer Brian Kelley.
Kelley started collecting MTA MetroCards in 2011, and he quickly became fascinated by other subway-related objects. His curiosity led him on a search throughout the city and online, where he met fellow train enthusiasts, as well as MTA employees, who helped him to source over 2,000 unique objects dating back to the mid-19th century. He carefully documented each of these, and posted them on an Instagram account, @the_nycta_project, which garnered great acclaim from the public. Now, these photographs are available as a hardcover book published by Standards Manual, the New York-based imprint co-founded by Hamish Smyth and Jesse Reed.
Smyth and Reed will discuss the project and its vitality to the history of design, with a particular focus on the impact of typography in wayfinding systems. Jesse Reed and Hamish Smyth are both former Associate Partners at Pentagram New York, where they worked under Michael Bierut. In 2014, they co-founded Standards Manual with the intent to archive and preserve lost artifacts of design history and make them available to future generations. Earlier this year, they started their own design office, Order, and opened their office/graphic design bookstore in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
