Whatever You Catch Brings You Joy: A Reading from "Spell Heaven" by Toni Mirosevich
By Everett Public Library
In “Spell Heaven,” a narrator, raised in a fishing family, finds herself at odds with her privileged teaching position in a white-collar academic world. What if, like the fishermen she grew up around, she awoke each morning and looked forward to the day’s prospects, the shining possibilities of luck and work and weather? With her wife, she moves to a Northern California seacoast town. In her search for kinship she heads down to the local fishing pier where she stumbles upon a community of outsiders. To join them she must relearn the language of those who know how to tell tall tales, how to spin sea stories. Slowly, malo po malo, little by little, she is welcomed in. She finds her crew.
Toni Mirosevich grew up in a Croatian-American fishing family in Everett, Washington. In addition to her new book of linked stories, Spell Heaven, she is also the author of the award- winning book of nonfiction stories Pink Harvest and five books of poetry. Her cross-genre writings have been anthologized in Best American Travel Writing, Best of the Bellevue Literary Review, Best Women’s Travel Writing and elsewhere. After early years of working in various labor jobs in the Pacific Northwest she began teaching creative writing at San Francisco State University in 1991. She is a professor emeritus at SFSU and lives with her wife in California. More info at: www.tonimirosevich.com.
