Aífe and Scáthach: Sacrifice and the Warrior’s Way with Carly Dwyer

By Hex Education Network

Join Celtic Reconstructionist Carly Dwyer live online for the second in a series digging into the goddesses, heroines and queens of the first-century Irish epic An Tàin Bo Cùailgne. Like the previous session on The Morrigan and Queen Medh, this class will explore a pair of women, who they are, what they did, and how we as modern-day witches can find ways to approach and pay respects to these impressive and complicated magical beings.
The two Scots of this series, Aífe and Scáthach, are sisters and rivals who are revered as the trainer of heroes and the most elite of warriors.
These two fascinating women appear only briefly in the Remscela of An Tain, but have quite an impact and relevance in the overall tapestry of 1st Century Irish Celts. The portrait of Celtic warriors usually depicts powerful, naked male warriors, and while female warriors are outnumbered in the mythology, it is interesting that the greatest of warriors and the maker of heroes is a woman.
Class Highlights
  • Explore the values and the lessons of Irish warriors
  • Learn how Scáthach and Aífe create heroes
  • Understand their influence on their culture
In the second hour, you will explore ways of incorporating Aífe and Scáthach into your practice when you need the strength and inspiration of the warrior, for those times when you need to become your own hero.
Disclaimer: We will also discuss the rape of Aífe and the sacrifice she makes in the end. This topic will be approached with utmost caution and respect and a warning will be given prior to the discussion, and it will be clear when that topic has closed so that anyone participating can skip that section if they choose.
