Rethinking assessment - Panel discussion with Heads Forward
By We Are In Beta
Never has the divide between school leaders and DfE felt more stark. With distrust in how decisions have been reached and frustration with how they have been communicated.
Whilst as a profession we are understandably angry, we are also adamant that a repeat of the confusion and chaos must, and can, be avoided for GCSEs and A’ Levels in 2021.
Our minds turn to what we can do - individually and collectively - to speak out, plan and act to make sure our students will achieve the results they deserve next summer.
Going further, what opportunity can we take to think again for what and how we assess in our schools? What can we change, lose or improve?
We Are In Beta and the Teach First network Heads Forward are joining forces to pull apart these questions and work to challenge our thinking on what we know to be right for our schools and for our students.
With a dual focus on the action we can take in each of our own schools, and how we unite our voice to drive change in national policy, the questions we’ll address include:
- What are our fears for the year ahead?
- What has been laid bare about how current assessment policy and practice falls short of ensuring all students achieve the results they deserve?
- What are we - as individuals, schools and a profession - going to do differently to avoid a new or repeated crisis in Summer 2021?
- How can schools connect and collaborate with others to safeguard fairness and be confident in our own judgements?
- What do Gavin Williamson and Nick Gibb need to hear and understand so the right decisions are made, at the right time and communicated effectively?
