The Agents’ Roundtable: Breaking the Ice for International Literature
How do translations reach the Anglophone market? How do you bring foreign-language titles to publishers? Three literary agents working with some of the most exciting global voices today discuss their role in the literary translation ecosystem, and how they are breaking the psychological ice to help move international literature across worlds. A portion of the roundtable will be devoted to audience questions.
Moderator: Julia Sanches
Presenter(s): Kelly Falconer, Laurence Laluyaux, Sandra Pareja
Julia Sanches is a translator of Portuguese, Spanish, and Catalan. Before becoming a full-time translator, she worked at a New York literary agency. A founding member of the collective Cedilla & Co., she sits on the Council of the Authors Guild, and is a part-time bookseller at Riffraff bookstore and bar.
Kelly Falconer founded the Asia Literary Agency in 2013 to represent fiction and nonfiction “from and about Asia,” with a few notable exceptions. Her twenty-year career in book publishing began in London, where she worked as an editor. In 2012, she was the Literary Editor of Asia Literary Review.
Laurence Laluyaux is a Director of RCW Literary Agency in London. She grew up in France, taught in the US, and worked as an interpreter prior to becoming an agent. She represents authors from Latin America, Asia, and Europe.
Sandra Pareja works at Massie & McQuilkin Literary Agents. She is the primary agent for a select list of authors. Originally from Toronto, she worked as an assistant editor at Duomo/Granta en español, and as a part-time translator. She founded “Albor,” a Barcelona reading series.
