Learn how to get even the most challenging parents onside with a little help from technology and language.

When you’re working with parents whose children are the focus of long standing issues, relationships get tested to the limit.

Parents can get fatigued by all the calls and conversations. They get tired by having what feels like the same conversations over and over again. They get defensive.

They start to focus on scenarios they think could have been handled better by the school rather than exploring the issue at hand - their child’s behaviour.

This prevents you from coming away from the meeting with what you want - positive actions and collaborative partnership.

You get frustrated, they don’t feel heard and nothing changes.

So, how do you stop them from deflecting and start focusing on working together to find a resolution? How do you remove the emotion from the conversation to avoid the defensiveness?

Assistant Head, Jenny Hanson and her team at Broadwater:

improve working relationships with parents

reduce repeat incidents of poor behaviour over time

...by using data as the basis of all conversations with parents.

What data to use and how to get it (demo)

What the data looks like once you have it and how best to show it to parents

What data points you should focus on and why

The most common objections and complaints have how to use the data to overcome them.

Senior pastoral leaders whose pastoral teams and Heads of Year are spending too much time in difficult parent meetings not making the impact they would like. You want there to be greater consistency in how they prepare, the information they bring to meetings and the language they use to ensure conversations lead to positive outcomes.

Heads of Year / Achievement leaders, who are tired of having the same conversation with parents, who don't seem to engage in the situation as you present it. You want these combative relationships to be more supportive. You want your students to shine again.

Teachers and form tutors, who dread the thought of sharing the bad news about student's behaviour with the parents. You don't yet have the back pocket phrases or data driven approach, which disarms parents and creates the conditions for cooperation.

"Parents express great confidence in the school. One parent’s view reflecting the views of many, commented, ‘The school has been fantastic at supporting both my children’s educational, social, and personal needs throughout the time they’ve been there. I cannot fault their dedication and passion at all.’"(Ofsted, June 2023)
