Paul Harding: This Other Eden
By TPLCulture
Pulitzer Prize-winning author Paul Harding joins us to discuss the true story of Malaga Island, an isolated island off the coast of Maine that became one of the first racially integrated communities. In This Other Eden, we are introduced to formerly enslaved Benjamin Honey and his Irish wife, Patience, who build a family and community together that more than a century later is home to an eccentric, diverse band of neighbours.
In this fictionalized account, when eugenics-minded state officials decide to “cleanse” the island, a missionary-school teacher selects one light-skinned boy to save while the rest are left to succumb to American “civilization” and institutions.
Paul Harding talks with El Jones (activist and author of Abolitionist Intimacies) about This Other Eden, a mesmerizing story that explores the hopes, the dreams, and the resilience of those perceived not to fit in a world brutally intolerant of difference.
