Painting the White Magnolia
By Nan Rae Studio
In China, the white Magnolia is called the Jade Orchid. The reason is readily apparent; especially from the quality of translucence shared by both the precious Jade and the glorious white Magnolia. Translucence, approaching a sort of ‘luminescence’, is the enchantment of the Magnolia, a quality that delights and enraptures even the casual admirer.
We will also be painting on tan or any colored Xuan paper, using an ‘Opaque White’, made popular by the Ling Nan School during the Ching Dynasty (19th Century). The manner is loose and impressionistic in the ‘Cantonese Style’ idealized by the Ling Nan Brush painters. There will be a strong Chinese foretaste of the Western Impressionists, for the Western (especially French) Impressionists were heavily influenced by both the early and latter Chinese and Japanese Brush painters.
