One True Sentence: A Panel on Hemingway featuring Mark Cirino, Andre Dubus III, and Jennifer Haigh

Porter Square Books: Boston Edition is delighted to partner with the Hemingway House and Preserve to bring you a hybrid event featuring One True Sentence editors Mark Cirino and Michael Von Cannon and contributors Andre Debus III and Jennifer Haigh! The editors and Andre Dubus III will speak at our Seaport location, while Jennifer Haigh will speak virtually from the Hemingway House, where she is currently the Writer-in-Residence.
This event will take place on Friday, May 26 at 7pm ET at Porter Square Books: Boston Edition for those of you in the Boston area, and virtually via Crowdcast for those of you who cannot attend in person.
A selection of the greatest sentences by the master, Ernest Hemingway. Sentences that can take a reader's breath away and are not easily forgotten. Each sentence has been selected and examined by authors such as Elizabeth Strout, Sherman Alexie, Paula McLain, and Russell Banks; filmmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick; A. Scott Berg, and many others in this celebration and conversation between Hemingway and some of his most perceptive and interesting readers.
Mark Cirino is the co-editor of One True Sentence and host of One True Podcast. He is the author/editor of seven previous books about Ernest Hemingway and serves as the general editor for Kent State University Press’s Reading Hemingway series. He served as a consultant on the film adaptation of Hemingway's Across the River and into the Trees. Cirino teaches American literature at the University of Evansville.
Michael Von Cannon is the co-editor of One True Sentence and producer of One True Podcast. He serves as an advisory editor on the multi-volume Hemingway Letters Project and is co-editor of the final volume of The Letters of Ernest Hemingway: 1957-1961. Von Cannon teaches at Florida Gulf Coast University.
Andre Dubus III's seven books include the New York Times’ bestsellers House of Sand and Fog, The Garden of Last Days, and his memoir, Townie. His most recent novel, Gone So Long, has been named on many “Best Books” lists, including The Boston Globe’s “Twenty Best Books of 2018.” He has two new books forthcoming, his novel Such Kindness, due in Summer 2023, and a collection of personal essays, Ghost Dogs, due in 2024. Dubus has been a finalist for the National Book Award, and has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, the National Magazine Award for Fiction, two Pushcart Prizes, and is a recipient of an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature. His books are published in more than twenty-five languages, and he teaches full-time at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
Jennifer Haigh is the author of seven books of fiction, most recently Mercy Street. Her books have won the PEN/Hemingway Award, the Massachusetts Book Award and the PEN New England Award in Fiction, and have been published in eighteen languages. Her short stories have been published widely, in Granta, The Atlantic, Electric Literature, The Best American Short Stories and many other places. She has been awarded fellowships by the National Endowment for the Arts, the James Michener Foundation and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, she now lives in Boston.
